Remembering William Safranek
June 16, 1953 - February 17, 2014
The Florida Branch of the American Society for Microbiology has established the William Safranek Award of Excellence to honor Dr. William "Bill" Safranek, the long time treasurer of the FLASM. Dr. Safranek was committed to helping promote scientific research and education amongst Florida's next generation of scientists.
Dr. Safraneck was also an Assistant Professor at the University of Central Florida Burnett School of Biomedical Sciences where he received multiple teaching awards including the 2010 UCF Teaching Incentive Award and in the 2013 College of Medicine's Founders' Day honoree for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching.
Each year at the FLASM annual meeting the Safranek Award of Excellence will be awarded to a student for their outstanding poster or oral presentation.
In 2015, the inaugural year, the Safranek Award was given to Ms. Gabby Barbarite of Florida Atlantic University.
Bill was an outstanding scientist, educator, mentor and friend. Bill will be missed.
